In broad terms it requires a written contract for freelance work of $500 or more (alone or aggregated over 120 days), payment by the contract date or within 30 days of completion if no date is set, and prohibits retaliation. The Illinois Department of Labor handles complaints; private actions may allow damages and fees. Cook County small claims cover claims up to $10,000.
