Client disputes the invoice: calm response

How to respond when a client disputes an invoice: separate the undisputed part and ask for specifics.

“The longer and softer you make it the more it reads like you think you're being unreasonable for wanting to get paid.” This one is short and direct, with no “sorry to bother you”.

Never argue in a long email. Ask exactly which items are disputed and request payment of everything else now.

Hi [Name],

Thanks for raising this. To resolve it quickly, could you tell me in writing which line items you're disputing and why?

For the items that aren't in question ([list / amount]), please arrange payment by [date] — [payment link]. I'll respond on the disputed items within 2 business days of hearing from you.

For reference: [contract / approval email / delivery date] is attached.
